PATA Newsletter for November, 2009
PATA Manzanillo has spent the last few months expanding free spay/neuter community outreach services with one-day mini-clinics in and around Manzanillo’s neediest neighborhoods. Now nearly 1,700 animals have received the gift of life with free spay/neuter surgeries sponsored financially by PATA over the past 4 years.
Here are some highlights for what to expect from PATA over the next month, and ways to get involved:
First Fall Spay/Neuter Clinic, November 13 thru 15
We are pleased to announce the addition of another MASH-style clinic to meet the overwhelming demand: next weekend Nov. 13-15 will mark the first ever 3-day fall season clinic at the Casa Ejidal in Santiago (NOT the same location as in March).
There will be a walk-through and familiarization meeting this Sunday, November 8th from 10 am to 12 pm. We'll check out the new clinic site and do a dry run of the operations, as well as talk about basic procedures for registration, recovery, and instrument cleaning. This will also be a good time to drop off loaners and supplies such as tables, chairs, cages/crates/kennels, towels and other linens, newspapers, and cleaning supplies.
If anyone has a small bar fridge, coffee maker, small clip lamps, extension cords and water cooler to lend, they will be put to good use (and returned if clearly labled with name and telephone number).
DIRECTIONS: The location of the Santiago Casa Ejidal is about 3 blocks in from the main jardin traffic light of Santiago. Turn in on the main street past the garden and take the second left for one block. Turn right and the Casa Ejidal is on the left hand side behind a wrought iron fence.
If you plan to volunteer, please give me a heads up ASAP which day, volunteer role you're interested in, and shift(s) you plan on taking. This makes it easier to see where we have "holes" or need more people. If you are not working registration, the morning shift can start from 8:30 am to 1:30 pm, and the afternoon shift from 1 pm to 7:30 pm. Or write and let us know what time slot works best for your schedule – these shifts are simply suggestions not guidelines.
Other necessary items we need for the clinic to function:
- Crates, cages and kennels -- used to form the intake area of the clinic and safely house the various four-legged patients awaiting surgery. Please label clearly with your name and telephone number in permanent marker. They will be returned, cleaned, to owners after November 20th.
- Towels, sheets & newspapers -- Necessary in the recovery area to wrap cold animals coming out of surgery, line cages and soak up accidents. Clear our your linen closets and donate old towels & sheets that you won't need anymore.
- Miscellaneous supplies -- the following items are available at most area pharmacies and will greatly reduce the overhead cost of the clinic in case anyone would like to make tangible donations: alcohol, bleach, syringes (jeringas) in 1 ml size, scalpel blades (hojas de bisturi), gloves, gauze (gasas) bulk pack or single sterile-wrap, Benzetacil Fco. 10 ml, hydrogen peroxide (agua oxigenada) Fco. 500 ml, or needles for syringes (agujas para jeringas).
- Meal donations -- and we also need donations of breakfasts (ie muffins, croissants, bagals/fixings, breakfast burritos, single serve yogurt), lunches (pizza, sandwiches, fruit, salads, etc) and light snacks (ie. veggie/dip platters, fruit, juice, energy bars) to fuel the volunteers and vets onsite during the clinic days (leaving to go eat is often not an option with the high volume of patients that require attending). If you and some friends want to get together to "sponsor" or host a either breakfast or lunch for 15-20 volunteers during Nov. 13-15, please email me with the meal you'd like to provide, date and contact information.
Dog Jog 5-km Walk-a-Thon Returns!
The ever-popular 5-km Dog Jog charity walk/run returns on Sunday, November 29th at 8:00 am. The route will again be around the Santiago Peninsula. Join us for a pleasant walk around the winding and picturesque peninsula, with or without a furry companion.
Pre-register before-hand and gather pledges from family, friends, neighbors and coworkers..... If someone wants to pledge you from afar, direct them to this website, where they can donate via Paypal. All they need to do is email us and let us know the donation was a pledge for you.
Prizes for top finishing dog and human, and top fundraiser! The registration, rules and regulations, and pledge forms can be downloaded from this website. The links are on the home page. Registration fee includes a comemorative T-shirt and after-race refreshment. All proceeds go towards supporting the spay and neuter campaigns.
FRESH NEW ONLINE LOOK!
Lastly, we are pleased to launch a fresh, new website look with an easier and better-organized navigation, hopefully making it a friendly user experience. Read up on programs and upcoming events; subscribe to follow us on Twitter; and join our group on Facebook (under "Help Mexican Street Animals").
As always, donations are accepted from our website via Paypal using your Paypal account, your credit card, or directly from your bank account.
Please help us by spreading the word and talking up the clinic and Dog Jog with neighbors, friends, coworkers and clients. If everyone takes it upon themselves to generate more interest and support, then we can ensure the continued success of this project, which has all of the Manzanillo community at heart.
saludos,
